This Week's Action Items

#1: SPEAK OUT AT HARRIS TELE-TOWN HALL
After a noisy and combative town hall last month in Salisbury, Rep. Andy Harris has been lately doing phone-in conference calls. Just a few days ago, he scheduled a tele-town hall for the Eastern Shore. The call-in forum starts at 5:25 pm on Monday evening, Dec.11. This is your chance to ask Harris about his support for everything from Roy Moore to concealed gun carry permits to the corporate tax giveaway. For more information on connecting, go to vekeo.com/andyharrismd/

#2: SIGN PETITION FOR FAMILY LEAVE BILL
The General Assembly will be taking up a measure to override Gov. Larry Hogan's veto of a family leave bill that was passed by lawmakers last year.  The  Healthy Working Families Act would provide earned paid sick leave to 750,000 Marylanders as well as help businesses by increasing productivity and employee retention. Senator Mathias has supported the bill in the past but has not indicated whether he would support the override. Sign the petition asking him to support Healthy Working Families.

#3: SUPPORT A CLEAN DREAM ACT
Demand that members of Congress in the House and the Senate clean up the mess left by President Trump regarding children whose status in the U.S. has been endangered by the termination of DACA. There is bipartisan support for moving to repair this damage by passing a Clean Dream Act or by attaching it to the Dec. 22 government funding bill. Go to Indivisible.org for more information on how you can be effective in this fight.

HOW TAX PLAN HURTS MARYLAND TAXPAYERS
Even though the Republican tax plan has cleared the Senate, the fight is not over. The plans differ between the House and  the Senate, but one thing is sure, many Maryland residents will pay more. About 46 percent of taxpayers in the state itemize their deductions, and the GOP bills will scramble their returns by cutting deductions for state and local income tax. According to the data, Maryland ranks fourth in the country in the amount claimed for this deduction. Meanwhile, southern states will gain the benefit since they are at the bottom of the list in this stat. How can Andy Harris support that? Good question to ask at the town hall. The bill will come back from conference and be voted on the week of Dec. 18, according to many observers. That mean Rep. Harris will once again have to make a decision on whether to help his constituents, or the big corporations that will benefit most.
